WATERFIRE SHARON PA
SERVING THE SHENANGO VALLEY
AMOUNT DONATED: $68,846.87
WaterFire was brought to Sharon, PA in 2013 with the mission of revitalizing the downtown region of Sharon and surrounding areas, using the power of art. This nonprofit initiative was founded by acclaimed artist Barnaby Evans, originally in Providence, RI. As envisioned, a ceremonious display of artwork and fire on the river unites a community and draws crowds of 12,000 or more to the front steps of over 40 local businesses. This exposure is helping to establish downtown Sharon as a destination for tourism and shopping. In 2024, we have two events planned, July 27th and September 21st.

During our river lighting ceremonies, there is a corresponding all-day event that includes activities for families and community members to engage. As an art-centered event, guests can expect 3 live band performances at the main stage, interactive street performances throughout the event, shopping for art and handmade items, a variety of food vendors, and hands-on activities for children. Our Children's Fun Zone offers crafts to take home that encourage imagination like sand necklaces, tote bags, and more. There are also giant building blocks, a music wall, mats for tumbling, and water toys.
Throughout the event, guests will find unique photo opportunities and experience how the work of many artists comes together to transform the street, symbolic of the power the community has to transform together.
The river ceremony begins with the lighting of our WaterFire globe and 55 floating braziers. Dramatic displays of performance art are carried out by people on boats, requiring the coordination of 150+ volunteers. We take this opportunity to also honor influential people whose work has greatly impacted the revitalization of Mercer County.
Our future plans include more partnerships with local businesses such as promotions, giveaways, scavenger hunts, advertisements, etc.
Needs that Cannot beMet without Your Help
We are the only WaterFire left operating aside from the original installation in Rhode Island, and we are concerned we won’t be able to continue this vital community event. Unfortunately, we have seen a decline in donations and sponsorships due to challenging economic times beginning in 2020.
This funding would help us replenish supplies for our interactive experiences, increase our budget for live music to attract better talent, and create WaterFire merchandise to sell and promote the event.
Overall, we are looking to improve the guest experience and grow Sharon's WaterFire to expand our mission of revitalizing the area.
